Islam Makhachev Suggests UFC Opponents for Usman Nurmagomedov's Debut

UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev indicated that Usman Nurmagomedov might be joining the promotion soon. Makhachev is set to defend his welterweight title against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330. This fight follows his victory over Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322, where he became the UFC's latest two-division champion.

While Makhachev prepares for his upcoming bout, his longtime teammate, PFL lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov, is a free agent and could potentially sign with the UFC in the near future. UFC CEO Dana White has publicly expressed interest in signing the undefeated fighter, and his manager, Ali Abdelaziz, has hinted at preliminary discussions. Nurmagomedov last competed at PFL New York, where he defeated Archie Colgan.

Speaking ahead of UFC 330, Makhachev not only suggested that a UFC signing for Nurmagomedov is likely but also proposed several potential matchups for the PFL champion.

Islam Makhachev Believes Usman Nurmagomedov is Ready for Immediate UFC Title Shot

During a UFC 330 media day press conference, Makhachev addressed questions about Nurmagomedov's potential UFC debut. He hinted that a deal might be in the works.

"Usman has been training with us since he was very young. I know 100 percent that he's ready to fight for the UFC title tomorrow," Makhachev stated regarding Nurmagomedov.

"In my opinion, Usman has fulfilled his obligations in the PFL and is prepared to deliver a strong performance in the UFC. Now is the opportune moment for Usman to join the UFC, and we have some individuals in mind. We are targeting Justin for the belt, but if he needs to have one more [fight], he will face Arman [Tsarukyan] or [Mauricio] Ruffy."

Arman Tsarukyan and Mauricio Ruffy are scheduled to compete in the co-main event of UFC 331 next month in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, the return timeline for lightweight champion Justin Gaethje remains uncertain, though speculation suggests he will face the winner of the Tsarukyan vs. Ruffy bout for his first title defense.
